Path of Exile 2 patch 0.5.0, Return of the Ancients, is set for Friday, May 29 at 4 p.m. EDT, and that's the date most players should circle if they're searching for the so-called season 5 release date. The same launch lands at 1 p.m. PDT, 5 p.m. BRT, 9 p.m. BST, 10 p.m. CEST, then 5 a.m. JST and 6 a.m. AEST on Saturday, May 30. Fate of the Vaal ends right before the patch goes live, but your characters aren't being wiped. They'll move into Standard Early Access or Hardcore Early Access, along with their gear, so anyone sorting stashes, builds, or PoE2 Items doesn't need to panic about losing progress.

The patch also comes with a free weekend, running from Friday, May 29 to Monday, June 1 at 4 p.m. EDT. Based on the available information, this applies to Windows PC and Xbox Series X. Players can jump in without an Early Access key, and any progress made during the weekend is saved to the account. That's a pretty good hook for new players, though there are still gaps. We don't have a confirmed maintenance start time, downtime length, preload window, patch size, or queue opening time. If you're planning time off work, don't build the whole day around guesses.

The big change isn't just a new league mechanic. Return of the Ancients is aimed squarely at the endgame, especially the Atlas and the way players move into it after the campaign. Instead of being dropped into a wide map system with little direction, players should see post-campaign storylines that introduce older league mechanics and lead toward weaker versions of pinnacle bosses. That matters. A lot of players like a huge endgame, but they still want a target. Game director Jonathan Rogers has been cited as saying the team wanted to give players both a goal and a finish line, and that idea shows in this structure.

Runes of Aldur is the league attached to patch 0.5.0, and rune crafting looks like one of its main draws. The confirmed pitch is simple enough: players can chase strange, powerful upgrades through a new rune system. The details, though, are still thin in the supplied material. Aldur's Legacy and unique item runes are clearly important topics, but we don't yet have firm rules for sockets, corrupted items, rune tiers, drop sources, or trade limits. The patch also adds two ascendancies, Spiritwalker and Martial Artist, while skipping new base classes and weapon categories. Both sound build-defining, but exact node text, class ties, and damage scaling still need proper confirmation.

Some of the loudest pre-launch chatter is still unverified. Passive tree changes, Armour/Evasion hybrid clusters, Subterfuge Mask, Gravebind magic-find farming, Acolyte of Chayula, Ancestral Bond, minion buffs, Flux, Two-Stone Rings, Facebreaker, and Auspex have all appeared in discussion, mostly through video topics or teaser material. Treat them as leads, not patch notes. If you're making a league starter, keep the plan flexible until official data is live. Item filter updates are also worth watching, especially if runes and new item classes affect what drops on the ground. Players who trade early or buy cheap Path of Exile2 Items should still verify every mechanic in-game, because a bad assumption on day one can cost more than a slow campaign run.
